He never finished it. Only with Monroe Stahr do we meet a hero who seems to have it all, a self-sustaining character who does not need a feminine Virgil to guide him, a successful businessman who nobly soars above a town of flared egos and disingenuous fakes.

The scenes are well crafted, gpi they don’t hang together as well as they would after a few more rounds of editing. For an unfinished novel The Last Tycoon is a powerful work. In this book, there’s no point paying attention to the plot or getting invested in the characters. But the concentration on fitzgrald genuine romance between two characters in the story we’re watching is clearly trying to come across as serious and thus; being self-aware of its own compositions is an idea the film fails to get across.

Oh no, there’s been an error
I’m certain no author would want to be judged based on their half-finished work. All I know is that what I read the unfinished novel along with notes by Fitzgerald and Matthew Bruccoli, a Fitzgerald scholar was underwhelming. They were alone and on too slim a basis for what had passed already. From what I gathered reading his working notes, the unwritten conclusion of this story would not have amounted to much, in my opinion.
If one book could ever be ‘like’ another, I should say it is more ‘like’ The Great Gatsby than any of my other books. But we don’t see Stahr come out of the labyrinth. Haunted by the death of his wife, s Studio Head Monroe Stahr works eighteen hour days, each one a collision of talent meetings, set visits, script brainstorms and preview screenings.
