That was the only problem I saw that might hinder you from enjoying this. I also found the writing to be a little simple and raw, which only accentuated the YA aromatics.

Leaving aside his glaring fictionalization, Iggulden seems to delight in creating wholly unappealing main characters. On the plus side, it has inspired me to investigate more about some of the leading players. If you are not looking for historical accuracy, this is an adventure story that will capture your attention and grant a few hours of an entertaining read.

Meanwhile, in Rome, Gaius accompanies Marius on his Triumph before being confirmed as a Senator in his own right. The ending was a little cheesy, but kinda good cheese. He abandoned the history almost entirely, and the reader is left with an alternate history that only vaguely relates to what really happened. But when the Marius-Sulla civil war kicked in, I lost all respect for it. What really happened in the course of history might some times be as dry as a desert.
